In recent years Meyer Burger has steadily increased production and now occupies about 20 buildings in and around Thun. For reasons of capacity and efficiency, the Board of Directors and the business management have decided to bring together all divisions in a new building in Thun.
To guarantee the best possible processes for future production and the best possible working conditions for our research and development and other divisions, two buildings with a footprint of approximately 15,000 m2 will be built for more than 700 employees. The total investment is CHF 70 million. A building permit for the land has been negotiated with the city of Thun.
The first building pictured is the main building and will have space for production, trucking, offices, and a staff restaurant. The publicly listed holding company, Meyer Burger Technology, will also have its offices there. The second building is the Center of Excellence for Research and Development and will accommodate the Center for Technology Process Innovation (TPI) among other groups.
It goes without saying that the new building will be designed to be energy-optimized and will have solar modules fitted to the roof and the façade, a surface area totaling about 11,000 m2. In general, every effort will be made to use ground water to heat the buildings, as well as provide cooling for the building services and industrial operations. As much as possible, the heat generated by industrial operations will be recovered for building services us.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 10, 2011, and the foundation stone was laid on March 3, 2011 in the presence of leading figures from politics and industry. The progress of the construction work can be followed on the webcam. Meyer Burger plans to move into the first building in April, 2012.
Meyer Burger Technology and Meyer Burger would like to kindly thank the city of Thun, all involved authorities, and the residents in Schoren for their great support!
